LEGO Ninjago 70721: Kai Fighter Review

Today we are going to review Ninjago set 70721: Kai Fighter. Ninjago sets are not a theme we normally purchase and the plan was to move onto some the new City "Great vehicle" set reviews. However when the new Ninjago sets we won from the LEGO Facebook competition arrived on our doorstep, I thought it would be good to take a look at them.

Set Number: 70721

Theme: Ninjago.

Set Name: Kai Fighter.

Part Count: 196

Minifigures: 2

Australian RRP: $29.99

Featuring: Red and Gold Kai Fighter. Exclusive translucent Red Techno-Blade. (1 of 4)

The front of the box shows Kai’s Fighter zooming high in the skies over New Ninjago City. General Cryptor launches a rocket propelled missile towards Kai in his Red Fighter.

On the back we see some of the play features for this cool looking set: Flick fire missiles, speed mode adjustable wings and one of the four Techno-Blades in Red.

Inside the box we have two numbered bags, an instruction booklet and a sticker sheet.

A close up of the sticker sheet. I think this is the very first time I have seen numbers on the sheet to indicate where to apply them throughout the building process.

Here is a quick look at the parts for bag 1.  We get a couple of inverted Dark Gray Tiles, the new translucent red Techno-blade and General Cryptor head gear piece was in its own separate bag making me suspect it was manufactured in china*.

*For those who like to know where an element is made.

Kai has a wonderful double sided torso print with some really lovely details on him. The Dark Red and Gold printing go well together and they top it off with flames amongst it all. He has a single sided face print sporting a stylised scare across his left eye. Kai’s hair piece is completely new and exclusive to this set. It has a soft rubbery texture to it. We also get a new bandanna piece in red and it’s definitely going to be on everyone’s wish list! And finally, he has the Translucent Red Techno-Blade (1 of 4) that is exclusive to this set.

General Cryptor is the robotic leader of the Nindroid army, and a servant of the Digital Overlord. He has a double sided torso print that feature hoses and metal plating exposed from his torn robes. He has a double sided head print that is half torn, exposing metal plating all the way around. The head gear piece is all new and has borg like features to it. General Cryptor also has a new shoulder armour piece with printing that can hold 2 katana. His legs are printed also.

Here we have a step-by-step build of the first half of Kai’s Fighter.

Here are the contents of bag 2. Lots of different wedge type plates that are very useful for MOC building.

Here is the last of the step-by-step build and thus completing the set.

Here are the few spares we get at the end. A spare Red bandanna and a katana, gotta be happy with that.

Here are a few images of the completed set.

Here is a GIF of the wings in action.

Overall this is a fantastic set. It’s mostly Red so it has to be, right? It makes it go faster too. This was a really fun build that has some great SNOT* building techniques. I really enjoyed building  the adjustable wings feature, it was incredibly well thought out.
This set has two fantastic looking minifigures but Kai the Red Ninja would have to be the stand out. As a child the colour Red was my favourite and my inner child is saying “Hide this one from Jaspa! I don’t want to share it with him”  but of course I will… maybe. If you like to swoosh then this is for you!

 * Studs Not On Top

I know very little about the back-story of Ninjago so I apologise for any errors or lack of information that I may have missed.

Thanks for stopping by and reading this new review. I hope you enjoyed it!

Let us know in the comments below what your thoughts and opinions are on the set.

Until next time this is Tan Tile... Nin-ja-go-ing-out-ta-here
